Murchison Falls National Park Walking safaris: Guided Nature Walk Safaris

Murchison falls National Park is located in north-western Uganda. It is well-known for its remarkable walking safaris that are perfect for beginners and seasoned hikers alike.

Being the country’s largest Protected Area, it extends for over 3840 square kilometers. Furthermore, it provides some of the most awe-inspiring sceneries and landscapes. Not only will you be treated to views of the verdant savanna plains, raw swamps, dense forests, and waterfalls, you will come across lots of wildlife species. This beautiful Park is home to Murchison falls, the World’s most powerful waters from which the Area was named.

While on this walk, the Ranger guide will identify animals by their footprints or sounds, and point out unique birds and tree species, and others. Sights of buffaloes, elephants, buffaloes, lions, Uganda Kobs, leopards, hartebeests, warthogs, and Topis are common. The best-guided walking trails in this park include the hike to the top of the falls

Having arrived at the bottom of Murchison falls during boat rides, visitors disembark the boat and start the hike to the top of the falls. It lasts about 45 minutes on a guided hike. Hikers are treated to views of the rolling hills, specific bird species, and verdant vegetation and climaxed by the thunderous roar of the falls.

Nature walks are also undertaken through Kaniyo-Pabidi. Here, visitors may see primates (such as Olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, L’Hoests monkeys, and sometimes chimpanzees). Also expect butterflies, and birds especially the Ituri batis, the chocolate-backed kingfishers and many others are expected.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest walking safaris: Guided Nature Walk Safaris

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest walking safaris are also popular in Uganda and considered the best for nature lovers. These walks are conducted throughout the four sectors of the Park and go through the forest.  Along the way, visitors are able to sight different bird species, primates, butterflies, unique plant/tree species.

Some of the must-try walking trails in Bwindi are the Mubwindi birding trail in the Ruhija sector. It is so far, the best trail for bird watching in the Park.

Here, visitors marvel at bird species like strange weavers, Cinnamon-chested bee-eater, giant Kingfishers, African Emerald Cuckoo, Rwenzori batis, short-tailed warblers, and handsome francolins are common.

Other trails are the Munyanga waterfall walk, Rushura hill walk, Ivy Riverwalk, Muzubijiro loop, the long Buhoma-Nkuringo trail, and Habinyanja trail to name a few.

Kibale Forest Nature Walks

The 795-square-kilometer Kibale Forest National Park in Western Uganda is another fantastic place for undertaking guided walking safaris. Therein, visitors are introduced to some of the 70 mammal species that include 13 primate species, the snake species, amphibians, butterflies, and most interesting birds that include the sought-after green-breasted pitta.

The Nocturnal Forest Walk is one of the unmissable trails and extends for 12kms. Other incredible places for nature walks are around Kibale Forest National Park and include the Amabeere caves, and the Crater Lake walks. In addition, you can’t afford to miss the Bigodi Swamp Walk.

Mgahinga Walking Safaris

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park might obviously live in the shadows of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla safaris.  However, one other thing that can never be hidden is that it offers incredible walking safaris.

This 33.7-square-kilometer Protected Area has numerous walking trails that lead visitors through the slopes of Virunga Volcanoes. That is; the Gahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhabura Volcanoes. The Batwa cultural trail therein where hikers are introduced to the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of a unique pygmy community is also awesome. Activities during the Batwa trail are hunting demonstrations, a visit to the traditional healer, honey harvesting, making bamboo cups, making fire from rubbing sticks and so many things that will hold you in awe.

Queen Elizabeth National Park walking safaris

Most travelers to Queen Elizabeth National Park are interested in game drives and boat cruises. However, it is also an incredible destination for walking safaris?

Guided walks through Kyambura Gorge introduce visitors to the primates especially chimpanzees, Olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and others. The bush walks through the Mweya Peninsula or the Kasenyi Plains are done in the Company of armed Ranger guides.  Here, you will catch sights of hippos, Uganda Kobs, mongooses, Hippos, warthogs, Defassa waterbucks, and others. Other wonderful places to try out during walking safaris in/around the Park include areas along the Ishasha River, the Explosion crater trails, and the Maramagambo forest for the primates, birds, and bats.

Mabira Forest Walking Safaris

Situated along the Kampala-Jinja highway, Mabira Forest is one of the few natural rainforests in Uganda. It is also a must-visit safari destination for nature walks.

This dense rainforest boasts of some outstanding walking trails as well. They usher hikers to the birds, moths, primates, and others.

The primates like red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, black and white colobus monkeys, and Olive baboons, bush pigs and duikers call it home.

Lake Mburo National Park Walking Safaris

A number of hiking trails crisscross the verdant Rubanga forest where bird species like the Ross Turaco, Yellow-footed flycatcher, red-shouldered cuckoo, Harrier hawks, the double-touched barbets, Nubian woodpeckers, Emerald spotted wood-doves, the bare-faced go-away bird and double-toothed barbets are encountered.

Other amazing places for walking safaris in Uganda are Mount Elgon and Sipi falls area, Semliki National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and the Rwenzori Mountains National Park among others.

Best Time to go for Guided Nature Walking Safaris

It is important to note that guided walking safaris are available throughout the year. However the dry months of January, February, June, July, August, September, and December are the best. Thiss is mainly because temperatures are warmer and hiking trails dryer, considering the reduced precipitation levels. This makes walking less challenging.
