Murchison Falls National Park Walking safaris

Murchison falls National Park is located in north-western Uganda and is well-known for its remarkable walking safaris that are perfect for beginners and seasoned hikers alike.

Being the country’s largest Protected Area, it extends for over 3840 square kilometers and provides some of the most awe-inspiring sceneries and landscapes. Not only will you be treated to views of the verdant and vast savanna plains, raw swamps, dense forests, and waterfalls, you will come across lots of wildlife species. This beautiful Park is home to Murchison falls, the World’s most powerful waters from which the Area was named.

While on this walk, the Ranger guide will identify animals by their footprints or sounds, and point out unique birds and tree species, and others. Sights of buffaloes, elephants, buffaloes, lions, Uganda Kobs, leopards, hartebeests, warthogs, and Topis are common. Having arrived at the bottom of Murchison falls during boat rides, visitors disembark the boat and start the hike to the top of the falls. It lasts about 45 minutes on a guided hike and hikers are treated to views of the rolling hills, specific bird species, and verdant vegetation and climaxed by the thunderous roar of the falls.

Nature walks are also undertaken through Kaniyo-Pabidi, where sights of primates (such as Olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, L’Hoests monkeys, and sometimes chimpanzees), butterflies, and birds especially the Ituri batis, the chocolate-backed kingfishers and many others are expected.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest walking safaris

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest walking safaris are also popular in Uganda and considered the best for nature lovers. These walks are conducted throughout the four sectors of the Park and go through the forest along the way, visitors are able to sight different bird species, primates, butterflies, unique plant/tree species and their significance as well as natural features like waterfalls.

Some of the must-try walking trails in Bwindi are the Mubwindi birding trail in the Ruhija sector, so far, the best trail for bird watching in the Park where species like strange weavers, Cinnamon-chested bee-eater, giant Kingfishers, African Emerald Cuckoo, Rwenzori batis, short-tailed warblers, and handsome francolins are common. Kibale Forest Nature Walks

The 795-square-kilometer Kibale Forest National Park in Western Uganda is another fantastic place for undertaking guided walking safaris in Uganda and here visitors are introduced to some of the 70 mammal species that include 13 primate species, the snake species, amphibians, butterflies, and most interesting birds that include the sought-after green-breasted pitta.

Mgahinga Walking Safaris

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park might obviously live in the shadows of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla safaris but one thing that can never be hidden is the fact that it offers incredible walking safaris.

This 33.7-square-kilometer Protected Area has numerous walking trails that lead visitors through the slopes of Virunga Volcanoes (Gahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhabura Volcanoes), the Batwa cultural trail where hikers are introduced to the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of a unique pygmy community. Activities during the Batwa trail are hunting demonstrations, a visit to the traditional healer, honey harvesting, making bamboo cups, making fire from rubbing sticks and so many things that will hold you in awe.

Queen Elizabeth National Park walking safaris

Most travelers to Queen Elizabeth National Park are interested in game drives and boat cruises, but did you know that Park is great for walking safaris?

Guided walks through Kyambura Gorge introduce visitors to the primates especially chimpanzees, Olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and others. The bush walks through the Mweya Peninsula or the Kasenyi Plains are done in the Company of armed Ranger guides and the sights of hippos, Uganda Kobs, mongooses, Hippos, warthogs, Defassa waterbucks, and others are common. Mabira Forest Walking Safaris

Situated along the Kampala-Jinja highway, Mabira Forest is one of the few natural rainforests in Uganda and is also a must-visit safari destination for nature walks. This dense rainforest boasts of some outstanding walking trails that usher hikers to the birds, moths, primates, and others. The primates like red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, black and white colobus monkeys, and Olive baboons as well as bush pigs and duikers, birds (Hadada Ibis, Black-headed herons, Nahan’s francolin, Yellow-billed kites, yellow and grey longbills, Black-shouldered kites and Jameson’s wattle eyes) are mainly sighted during these walking safaris.

Lake Mburo National Park Walking Safaris

Best Time to go for Guided Nature Walking Safaris

Guided walking safaris are available throughout the year but the months of January, February, June, July, August, September, and December are the best because temperatures are warmer and hiking trails dryer, considering the reduced precipitation levels. This makes walking less challenging.
