A journey never to be forgotten: 6 day Wildlife and Lake Bunyonyi Safari.

Overview

The 6-day safari introduces you to Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth, Uganda’s second largest national park, which is teeming with wildlife, birds, and primates. You will be going on game drives, a boat tour, and chimp tracking. The visit to Bwindi is the highlight, as it is home to over 400 of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorilla population. Since 1964, an estimated 880 mountain gorillas have been protected therein. Furthermore, you will also tour the world’s second deepest lake – Lake Bunyonyi.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale National Park, Bigodi Swamp Walk: 6 day Wildlife and Lake Bunyonyi Safari.

Great Blue Turaco in Kibale.

Our guide will pick you up from your accommodation early in the morning and brief you about the tour before departing for Kibale Forest. It is about a 5-hour drive away from Kampala. After lunch, you will be escorted for a tour through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.

It will be a guided swamp tour that will bring you closer to primates, particularly monkeys, birds, and butterflies. The wetland is a bird paradise with approximately 138 species, and it is a renowned habitat to the Great Blue Turaco.

For the bird lovers, this 2 to 3 hour trek is highly recommended. There will be some muddy sections of the trek, so wear appropriate walking shoes. I hope you get to see the shoebill stork and the elusive Sitatunga antelope. Whats more, you may encounter some primates, perhaps even chimpanzees. Some of the primates you may encounter include; the grey-cheeked mangabey, olive baboons, red-tailed, blue, and L’Hoest’s monkeys, and the black and white Colobus. Here are also bushbucks, mongooses, and a host of other creatures. Head to the lodge at sun down.

Day 2: Chimp Trekking in Kibale National   Park. Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park: 6 day Wildlife and Lake Bunyonyi Safari.

Chimps in Kibale.

Kibale has the highest concentration of primate species in the world, including chimps. Uganda is home to over 5,000 wild chimps, making it an ideal location for spotting them! Chimpanzees are frequently observed swaying in the forest branches, while others snack on natural fruits.

An expert ranger will take you chimp trekking in the wee hours of the morning. Upon finding the chimpanzees, you will spend an uninterrupted hour with them. Return to the resort for lunch and some rest. You will afterwards depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park. The drive will take approximately 2 to 3 hours. You are most likely to arrive in the evening. Proceed to the Lodge is where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3: Game Drive and Boat Cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Evening Transfer to Ishasha Sector.

Elephants in Queen Elizabeth NP.

We’ll start your day early – at sunrise. Generally speaking, this is the best moment to see animals in their native environments. While on a game drive, you may see Africa’s renowned “Big Four,” as well as antelopes, waterbucks, bushbucks, giant hedgehogs, and an abundance of birds. After your game drive, get back to the lodge for lunch after your game.

Right after lunch, you will take a two-hour boat ride over the Kazinga Channel, which links Lakes Edward and George. The large groups of animals on the shores, including crocodiles, elephants, and enormous hippos, will undoubtedly captivate you. Still along the shoreline, you can spot an array of birds. After the boat ride, make your way to the Ishasha Sector where you will spend the night.

Day 4: Game Drive in Ishasha Sector. Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Tree Climbing Lions in QENP.

If time permits, you may go on early morning game drives in the Ishasha area so you can see the tree climbing lions. Proceed to Bwindi National Park after lunch.
With over 400 mountain gorillas, roughly half of the total population worldwide, including several habituated groups that can be trekked, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the major gorilla habitat in Uganda. It engulfs one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically diversified rain forests, dating back over 25,000 years. It is also home to approximately 400 plant species.
You will settle into your lodging, unwind, and get ready for a demanding day of trekking with the Bwindi gorillas the next day.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi, Travel to Lake Bunyonyi, Nature Walk.
Mountain Gorilla in Bwindi.

After an early meal, head to the park headquarters to join other trekkers for a briefing on the regulations governing gorilla trekking. Make your way into the jungle thereafter under the guidance of a ranger guide.

It could take you one to eight hours to locate the gorillas as you trek through dense vegetation, creeping plants with your guides. Though extremely dense, the steeply forested area is accessible to tourists due to the numerous animal pathways that intersect it.

Once the gorillas are located, you will have an hour to spend with them. Head back to the lodge afterwards for a scrumptous lunch. After there,  make your way to Lake Bunyonyi. The route will take you through a stunning region of the nation known as “the Switzerland of Africa”. It was named so considering its unusually cold climate while being close to the Equator.

It’s regarded to be among the most picturesque locations in western Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi is the second-deepest lake in Africa (900 meters), and one of the few locations where swimming is deemed safe due to the absence of bilharziasis and water predators. On this lake, you’ll be using a canoe. Head to the lodge to dine and unwind for the night.

Day 6: Morning Hike, Transfer back to Kampala.
Lake Bunyonyi.

Right after breakfast, you will hike over a few hills. Terraced hills that rise up above of the lake’s edge define the surrounding terrain of Lake Bunyonyi.

The name Bunyonyi, which translates to “place of little birds,” accurately describes the abundance of birdlife encircling the lake.

You will be driven back to Entebbe afterwards, stopping for lunch along the way. Arrival at the Airport will mark the end of the adventure.
