Uganda’s Cultural and Village Experience is a melting pot and every bucket lister’s place to be. There are numerous places you can still visit to experience the authentic cultures and village life in Uganda and these include;

Igongo Cultural Village

Situated in Biharwe, along the Kampala-Mbarara highway, Igongo Cultural village (also known as Itaramiro) is where visitors interested in learning about the Ankole culture visit. This cultural village features several traditional huts, large space with a fireplace to portray traditional homesteads with fireplaces where stories are told in the evenings around fire.

Igongo Cultural Village is fully equipped with traditional objects and built in a typical Ankole traditional setting hence allowing travelers to experience culture from the Ankole perspective. You will see a wide range of traditional items that were used by the old generation, some of which are still used to-date in storing produce, serving food, harvesting food, milking and processing into ghee, yoghurt, butter and other products.

Boomu Cultural Village

Boomu Cultural village is just at the border of Murchison Falls National Park, in the North-western Uganda. This is one of the unmissable places for enjoying cultural and village experiences in Uganda with activities including among others crop growing with ordinary hoes, food harvesting, cattle keeping and the “homestay experience”. Boomu Women’s Group/ or Cultural Village was established in 1999 and is made up of subsistence farmers from the villages of Kigaragara and Kihaguzi.

Guided tours through this Cultural Village introduce travelers to the cultures and traditions of the local communities, listen to interesting stories told by the elders, enjoy campfires, have a taste of the mouth-watering dishes and spend nights at the traditional Bandas.

Batwa Community

When you visit Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you will most likely be introduced to the Batwa community. The great hunter-gatherer lifestyle before these two Parks were gazetted. Hunting, harvesting honey, collecting herbal medicine, gathering fruits, collecting plants for dishes and medicine is how they spend their lives.

Bwindi and Mgahinga Forests were gazetted into National Parks and the Batwa pygmies got evicted and became squatters. Enjoy Batwa cultural experiences during your visit to any of these Parks and enjoy taking part in their activities. They include; making fire by rubbing sticks, use bow and arrow for hunting, traditional dances and so much more.

Entanda Cultural Village

It’s about an hour’s drive from Kampala City to Entanda Cultural Village in Mityana district . A visit to this Village introduces travelers to traditional “Kiganda Culture”. Activities such as bee keeping, animal rearing, crop growing, food harvesting, cooking and later feasting in a traditional “Kiganda way”. Entanda is not just an excellent place for cultural and village experiences but also a wonderful historical site. It is believed that Kintu, the first Muganda man met death spirits who wanted to kill his wife “Nambi”.

These death spirits known as “Walumbe” said that they dug big and deep pits as their hiding places. History has it that about 240 pits are found at Entanda and Nambi rocks and presently used for traditional worship. Guided tours of coffee and banana plantations, hunting, preparation and tasting of local dishes, traditional dances, playing traditional musical instruments.

Karamoja Community

The Karamojong, a pastoralist tribe in the North-eastern known for cattle-keeping, exhilarating traditional dances and traditional homesteads known as “Manyatta”. While you visit Kidepo Valley national Park for the game safaris, get the chance to experience the unique culture.

The thrilling traditional dressing, tools and symbols, music, local dishes and stunning homesteads that make them stand-out from the rest. The Karamajong are one of the few tribes that have been able to maintain their traditional cultures regardless of modernity.

Nshenyi Cultural village

More of Ankole cultures and traditions can be explored by visiting the popular Nshenyi Cultural Village close to Ntungamo district. A plethora of cultural activities include; traditional cow milking, traditional food preparation, guided nature walks, to mention but a few. This cultural village sits on a farm in a traditional pastoralist area comprised of rolling hills and savannah grassland.

The Bamasaba Cultural Experience

Bamasaba communities around Mount Elgon and Sipi falls area known for “Imbalu”- public male circumcision and Arabica coffee growing. These communities inhabit the slopes of Mount Elgon in districts of Manafwa, Mbale and Sironko.

Emburara Cultural and Farm Experience are part of Uganda’s Cultural and Village Experience. The Katwe fishing villages, the IK community, Rubuguri village, Kikongo cultural Village, the Kasoga fishing community, canoe racing, Kataara village.
