Remote and Stunning Places in Uganda: With its sweeping and magnificent savannah plains, equally jaw-dropping mountains, verdant rainforests, friendly and welcoming people, wildlife diversity, plethora of bird species, affordability of safaris, it is easy to see why Uganda, dubbed the “Pearl of Africa” is one of the top safari destinations in the African Continent.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo is set in the Uganda and southern Sudan borders, spanning over 790 kilometers north-East of the Capital (Kampala). It is made of remote, spectacular settings and semi-arid climate. It takes 9 to 12 hours (depending on the route) to drive from Kampala to this Park.

Travelers that endure are rewarded with the most authentic/raw African wilderness Experiences. They as well get sights of the rarest wildlife species. These include; cheetahs, Ostriches, Caracals, Klipspringers, striped hyenas and others. Thanks to its long distance, Kidepo has been able to maintain its natural beauty and untapped.

Kidepo National Park was added into the National Park system in 1962 and presently boasts 1442square kilometers to its name. This makes it the third largest National Park in Uganda. For the avifauna lovers, Kidepo Valley National Park is a birding Paradise and the unmissable species are Birds such as Abyssinian Roller, Ostriches, Jackson’s hornbills, African grey flycatchers, Long tailed night-jars, Karamoja Apalis, Pygmy falcons, White faced scoops owls, White billed weavers, Black breasted barbet, secretary birds, Greater kestrel, Northern carmine bee-eaters, Rufous chatter, and many others.

Semuliki National Park: Remote and Stunning Places in Uganda.

Sempaya Hotsprings, Semuliki National Park.

Reconnect, relax and loosen-up when you visit Semliki National Park. This Park is situated in the Western side of the country, within Bundibugyo District. Semliki National Park is also endowed with over 53 mammal species, about 441 bird species and the Sempaya Hotsprings. Surprisingly, even with such beauty and diversity, Semliki is one of the least-explored places in the country.

Forest and savannah elephants, Buffaloes, striped hyenas, Bush babies, blue monkeys, duikers, chimpanzees, Mona monkeys, Crocodiles, Olive baboons, Leopards, Hippos and bush babies are present in this beautiful Protected Area. Fr Birder, expect to see species like the Kivu ground thrush, African fish eagles, Shoebill storks, Black coucal, African Crakes, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Ituri batis, Red necked falcons, African pygmy goose, Greenwood hoopoe, Marsh tchagra and many others.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Getting to Mgahinga takes about an 8 hours’ drive from Kampala. The park borders Rwanda in the north and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. It is undoubtedly one of the most stunning yet least-explored safari destinations. This Park is about 34 square kilometers making it the smallest National Park in the country. However, it is stunning and biodiverse.

Certainly, one of the World-famous mountain gorilla trekking tours are provided in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Additionally, it is the only place where the frisky golden monkeys live in Uganda. Many of them have already undergone habituation thus travelers can trek and learn about them. It encompasses three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes namely Mount Sabyinyo, Muhabura and Gahinga.

Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve

Ostriches in Pian Upe Game Reserve.

At 2788 square kilometers, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is the second largest Protected Area in Uganda after Murchison falls National Park. It lies within the remote north-eastern corner of the country.

It is set within the Greater Karamoja Region, about 9-10 hours’ drive from Kampala Capital but is undeniably a treasure trove.

While here, expect to enjoy true African wilderness experiences while sighting exceptional wildlife species.  Among them are for instance; Ostriches, Rothschild giraffes, African Lions, Leopards, Kudus, Klipspringers, Roan antelope, Topis, Colobus monkeys, Olive baboons, impalas, Uganda Kobs, Vervet monkeys and many others.

Mount Elgon National Park

The largest Volcanic base in the world, Mount Elgon National Park.

Celebrated for being one of the top mountaineering destinations in Uganda, Mount Elgon National Park is also a favourite spot. It is is situated within the extreme Eastern side of the country bordering Kenya.

The Park is remote and over 5-6 hours’ drive from Kampala Capital. This stunning Protected Area shelters the World’s biggest caldera and its peak Wagagai is over 4321 meters above sea level.

Mount Elgon National Park is ideal for visitors interested in volcano/mountain climbing, hiking the Sipi Falls, Rock climbing, game viewing, trout fishing and birding. Additionally, travellers can view species like Baglafecht weavers, the endangered Lammergeier, African Goshawk, Ross Turaco, White-chinned prinia and others are spotted.
