Chimpanzees Lifespan

The longevity of chimpanzees is a fascinating subject to study, particularly in these early stages of the development of chimpanzee tourism. Let’s start by defining chimpanzees. Most tourists refer to chimpanzees as “chimps.” They are a subspecies of the giant ape that are indigenous to East and Central Africa’s savannahs and tropical rainforests.

Forests in Central Africa are home to four kinds of chimpanzees that have been confirmed. The scientists have, however, offered a fifth. The four species are the eastern chimpanzee, which is common in East African forests in Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the western chimpanzee of West Africa, the native chimpanzees of Nigeria and Cameroon, and the central chimpanzees of the Congo Basin and Cameroon.

On the other hand, the 5th proposed species of chimpanzees is the South Eastern Chimpanzee but it is not yet recognized by the IUCN. The chimpanzees share 98% of the human DNA.

Black, coarse hair covers the chimpanzees’ bodies except for their faces. Their faces are bare, but so are their fingers, their hands’ palms, and their feet. adult chimpanzees can reach a healthy weight of 40 to 70 kg, while a fully developed adult can weigh between 27 to 50 kg.

The Chimpanzees Habitat.

Although their largest concentrations are in Uganda and Rwanda, chimpanzees also live across Central and East Africa’s wooded regions. In Uganda, the chimpanzees can be seen in Kibale Forest National Park, Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest. All in the outskirts of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and other forested areas. In Rwanda, chimpanzees live in Nyungwe forest, Gishwati – Mukura forests, while others live in Volcanoes National Park though they are rarely seen since it’s famous for mountain gorillas.

The Chimpanzees’ Lifespan.

Chimpanzees tend to live longer than most other wild animals. In the wild, chimpanzees can live anywhere from 31 years for males and 39 years for females. They survive longer in captivity, though. For instance, the male chimpanzee who lived the longest, lived for 66 years. In contrast, the female lived for more than 70 years.

Best time to visit chimpanzee habitats.

Visitors come to the natural habitat of chimpanzees in order to interact with them in a vibrant manner. As they raise their children, travellers have the chance to discover more about their lives. Tour guides with a great deal of experience accompany visitors to the chimpanzee habitats. These include fascinating facts and details on the families of the chimpanzees.

The best time to visit the chimpanzees’ habitats and experience part of the chimpanzees’ lifespan is during the dry seasons. The dry seasons have low amounts of rainfall. These makes it easy to pass through the thick tropical rainforests to access the large chimpanzee families.

It is important to note that they live in groups of about 100 to 150 individuals. The months of June to September and December to February are the best months to visit chimpanzees’ habitats.

Activities done in the chimpanzees’ habitat.

There are mainly two activities travelers indulge in when in the chimpanzees’ habitats. These are ;chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation. The two activities have some similarities though the major difference lies in the time spent with the primates. The chimpanzee trek lasts for a maximum of 60 minutes while the chimpanzee habituation lasts for 4 hours.

To indulge in these activities, one needs to have a trekking or habituation permit. Tour operators purchase the permits on behalf of the guests. A chimpanzee trekking permit in Uganda goes for $250  for every individual.
